Being paid less than you are legally entitled to is more common than many workers realise. You are entitled to at least the minimum wage for your role, and often more under an award or enterprise agreement. If you think you have been underpaid, start by keeping a record of the hours you have worked and the amounts you have been paid. Check your payslips against the relevant award, which sets out minimum pay rates and conditions for your industry. Raise the issue with your employer in writing, as many underpayments are the result of error rather than deliberate wrongdoing. If the problem is not resolved, you can lodge a claim with the Fair Work Ombudsman. Our lawyers can help you work out what you are owed and how to recover it.
